It is easy to put off legal questions. But in Texas, time is one of the most important factors in a personal injury case.<\/p>\n<h2>The two-year rule<\/h2>\n<p>Under the Texas Civil Practice &amp; Remedies Code, the statute of limitations for most personal injury claims is <strong>two years from the date of the injury<\/strong>. That generally includes car and truck accidents, slip and falls, and other negligence claims. If you do not file a lawsuit within that window, a court will usually dismiss the case \u2014 even if liability is clear.<\/p>\n<h2>Important exceptions and shorter deadlines<\/h2>\n<p>The two-year rule is the starting point, not the whole story. Several situations can change the timeline:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Claims against a government entity.<\/strong> If a city, county, or state vehicle or property is involved, you may have to give formal written notice in a much shorter period \u2014 sometimes as little as six months, and some cities require even sooner.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Injuries to a minor.<\/strong> Deadlines can work differently when the injured person is a child.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The &#8220;discovery rule.&#8221;<\/strong> In limited cases where an injury could not reasonably have been discovered right away, the clock may start later.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wrongful death.<\/strong> These claims have their own timing rules.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"callout\"><p>Because exceptions are narrow and fact-specific, it is risky to assume one applies to you.
